Town of Danville, CA
General Plans 2010 and 2030
Barry Miller was retained by the Town of Danville in 2010 to manage preparation of the Town’s 2030 General Plan. Barry had previously served as lead consultant for Danville’s 2010 General Plan, adopted in 1998, and was brought back to guide the update. The new Plan extends the planning horizon by 20 years while retaining many of the community-defining policies established in the 1990s.
Danville is a primarily residential community of approximately 42,000 residents located 30 miles east of San Francisco. Covering 17 square miles, the Town is known for its historic downtown, high-quality services, scenic character, and exceptional quality of life. At the same time, its location in the San Ramon Valley creates pressure for additional housing and commercial development. The Plan reflects Danville’s vision to accommodate moderate growth while preserving its small-town character.
The project began with a comprehensive factual update to bring the 1998 baseline data forward to current conditions and address new state requirements and emerging issues. Monthly study sessions with the Planning Commission and Town Council helped refine policies and explore new directions. The Plan added new Sustainability, Economic Development, and Mobility sub-elements, updated the Land Use Map to meet regional housing needs, and emphasized compact, walkable, and transit-supportive development focused near Downtown Danville.
